GST registration is the first compliance step for most growing businesses in India. Getting it right — and at the right time — saves you from penalties and lets you claim input tax credit.
Who must register for GST?
- Businesses with annual turnover above ₹40 lakh for goods (₹20 lakh for services; lower in special-category states).
- Anyone making inter-state supplies of goods.
- E-commerce sellers and operators.
- Casual taxable persons and those liable under reverse charge.
Documents you will need
PAN of the business/owner, Aadhaar, proof of business address, bank account details, and a photograph. For companies and LLPs, incorporation documents are also required.
How the application works
The application is filed on the GST portal, an ARN is generated, and the GSTIN is usually issued within 3–7 working days once documents are verified. Voluntary registration is also allowed and often worthwhile if your clients are GST-registered.
